Earlier in the week, the 48-year-old accepted the challenge of winning eight titles from the British Championship, the Masters and the World Snooker Championship.

“It was great when I was seven, seven, seven and now it’s seven, seven, eight. So it would be good to go eight, eight, eight – three eight,” he told Eurosport. “I think it’s kind of a motivating thing to try and get another Masters, try and maybe another World. I said I was happy with one WC, one UK and one Masters; More than a month.“So when we start talking about going beyond that, I see everything as just a bonus; nice icing on the cake. 8, 8, 8 – let’s do it.”.

But he has since regretted those comments, despite one escape from the World Cup becoming a reality. Before defeating Carter at the Masters, O’Sullivan explained that such records really meant nothing to him..

“I wish I hadn’t mentioned that stupid eight, eight, eight,” O’Sullivan said on Sunday. “I don’t even care, but sometimes you feel like you have to say something. I really don’t care about numbers.”.

He went on to explain that it is difficult to “revive” snooker after an illustrious career spanning four decades, and he has a different view of rivals who aspire to his heights.”It’s hard to get excited because I’ve been doing this for so long,” added O’Sullivan.

“I’m just trying to incorporate it into my life. That’s how I see snooker. It’s been my whole life, so I have to find the right balance between being ready to play instead of feeling like I have to. I work hard and practice when I want to win tournaments. I didn’t go back to it.

“It’s just going out and playing enough that when I get to a tournament and it all comes together, it’s great. If not, I’ll try to put on the best show I can.”.
