In order to maintain their core group of players for their attempt to complete a threepeat in the 2024 season, the Kansas City Chiefs must reallocate some money this offseason. A probable cut is a hero from the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory against the 49ers.
The majority of the regular season was difficult for the Chiefs wide receiver group. QB Patrick Mahomes’ main options in 2023 were tight end Travis Kelce and rookie receiver Rashee Rice. Mecole Hardman, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Kadarius Toney all experienced various problems that affected their performance.
During the regular season, Valdes-Scantling only had 21 receptions for 315 yards and one touchdown. Thankfully, MVS switched it on for the Chiefs during the Super Bowl. In the Chiefs’ thrilling victory, he hauled in three receptions for twenty yards, including a crucial touchdown reception.
Despite a few huge catches, Valdes-Scantling’s 2023 failed plays will stick in his memory more than his 21 receptions for 315 yards and one touchdown at the end of the regular season.
That is in no way sufficient to support his $14 million 2024 cap hit. The Chiefs, who are craving for three consecutive victories, would be better off moving on and looking for their much-needed wide receiver depth elsewhere, as MVS only accounts for $2 million in dead money (and $12 million in savings).
