Adam Wharton, a midfielder for Blackburn Rovers, is scheduled to have a physical this morning before finalizing his £22.5 million transfer to Crystal Palace.
For the England Under-20 international, the clubs reached an agreement on a cost of £18.5 million with an additional £4 million in add-ons on Tuesday morning. The 19-year-old has now traveled to London to finalize the transaction and sign a five-and-a-half-year contract.
Since making his senior debut in August 2022, Wharton has made 51 appearances for the team. This season, he has appeared in all but two of their Championship games, contributing two goals and three assists.
Everton, Newcastle, and Tottenham are just a few of the Premier League teams that have expressed interest in Wharton.
The midfielder has previously received high marks from Rovers manager Jon Dahl Tomasson, who said of him: “He can do things that nobody sees before.” He has excellent vision, can play under pressure, and only needs one touch.
Blackburn’s director of football Gregg Broughton has referred to the Blackburn academy product, who made his debut for England’s U20 team against Italy in November, as the next best English prospect outside of the top division.
The news of Wharton’s signing follows Palace’s announcement of Daniel Munoz, their new right defender, joining from Belgian club Genk.
He is said to have joined Roy Hodgson’s team for just £8.5 million, despite the fact that an initial contract was estimated to have cost the club almost £10 million.
The 27-year-old, who went on strike to pressure Selhurst Park to make the transfer, has agreed to a three-and-a-half-year contract with a one-year option.
