Is Romy Gonzalez going to be on the Red Sox Opening Day roster?
Romy Gonzalez, one of the Red Sox’s many offseason additions, is one of several players fighting for Opening Day roster slots at spring training in Fort Myers. Three major league seasons under his belt, Gonalez was taken off waivers by the White Sox in late January. After the team signed right-hander John Brebbia to a one-year contract, the 27-year-old lost his place on Chicago’s 40-man roster; nevertheless, he did not remain in DFA limbo for very long. Gonzalez, a native of Florida, was first chosen by the White Sox out of Miami in the 18th round of the 2018 amateur draft. After spending $125,000 to sign with Chicago, the former Hurricane made his Pioneer League debut as a professional.
Gonzalez’s baseball career was temporarily suspended because to the COVID-19 outbreak in 2019, after he played his whole first full season with Class-A Kannapolis. Despite not getting an invitation to the White Sox’s alternate training facility in 2020, he clearly made the most of his time off.
Gonzalez played in 78 games (344 plate appearances) with Double-A Birmingham to begin the 2021 season, batting.267/.355/.502 with 11 doubles, 20 home runs, 47 RBIs, 52 runs scored, 21 stolen bases, 38 walks, and 97 strikeouts. After that, the right-hander was promoted to Triple-A Charlotte, where he played in nine games through the end of August, going 11-for-32 (.344) with three home runs and ten RBIs.
