Alabama dominated the four-team College Football Playoff under Nick Saban’s leadership. With Kalen DeBoer leading the Crimson Tide, the College Football Playoff will feature 12 teams in 2024, and the team must adjust to the new environment.
The college football community received some clarification regarding the 12-team playoff on Tuesday. The five highest-ranked conference champions are guaranteed a spot in the College Football Playoff  with the unanimous approval of the 5-7 model for qualification. The College Football Playoff committee will select the next seven highest-ranked teams to fill the remaining spots on the field.  The choice to use this model rather than the 6-6 one that was originally being explored was greatly influenced by Kalen DeBoer’s familiarity with the Pac-12’s demise.
“This is a very logical adjustment for the College Football Playoff based on the evolution of our conference structures since the board first adopted this new format in September 2022,” said Dr. Mark Keenum, president of Mississippi State and chair of the CFP Board of Managers. This choice was taken in order to guarantee a position for a Group of Five team because a 6-6 format was no longer required because there were only four “power conferences” left.
