On paper, the Indianapolis Colts’ wide receiver position group appears to be quite locked in.
However, that did not prevent them from signing veteran Greg Ward Jr. during a large tryout on Tuesday.
Ward Jr. signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017 as an undrafted free agent from Houston.
He made his regular-season debut with the squad in 2019 and played 40 games over three seasons (2019–2021).
Throughout his career, he caught 88 passes for 768 yards and 10 touchdowns. His greatest season came in 2020, when he achieved career highs in all categories, including 53 receptions, 419 yards, and six touchdowns.
Ward Jr. spent time with the Eagles under now-Colts head coach Shane Steichen, who served as his offensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022.
Ward Jr. played in all 17 games for the Eagles in 2021 and was placed on injured reserve for the 2022 season.
The Colts dismissed injured wide receiver Ethan Fernea in order to create place for Ward Jr. Fernea joined the Colts practice squad in 2022 as an undrafted free agent, and he has been a member of the team ever since.
I believe the organization will keep Fernea on their injury reserve list if he clears waivers. However, we will have to watch to see if they choose that path.
