Four-time Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel has ‘repeatedly enquired’ about coming out of retirement to re-join Red Bull.
That is according to Red Bull chief Helmut Marko amid continued speculation around the future of Sergio Perez.
The Mexican is out of contract at the end of the year with a wide range of drivers hoping to take his seat and directly race against Max Verstappen.
Vettel, who won four consecutive titles with Red Bull from 2010 to 2013, has always been tentatively linked with a return to the Austrian team, having previously dropped hints about a sensational return to the sport.
It has always been presumed that if he were to come back, the 36-year-old would more likely join the upcoming Audi project or Mercedes.
But Marko, who oversaw Vettel’s rise to F1, has revealed that his former protege has asked about the possibility of racing alongside Verstappen, but claims a reunion between driver and team is very unlikely.
Speaking to German media, Marko said: ‘[Vettel] has repeatedly enquired with us, but I don’t think it would be pleasant for him to drive next to Max Verstappen.
‘If I’m correctly informed, he seems to be moving towards Porsche and long-distance racing. I think that would be a very nice step for him.’
Reports have claimed that despite his somewhat underwhelming form, Perez has been offered a one-year contract extension, but the six-time race winner wants at least a two-year deal.
Despite having the quickest car, Perez is only fifth in the championship having dropped a few places after his first lap crash in Monaco last Sunday.
Red Bull are content with the 34-year-old as his inability to challenge Verstappen means there is harmony among their drivers, but his lack of pace could cause an issue with other teams closing the gap to reigning champions.
Ferrari and McLaren have greatly improved their pace in 2024, with the Prancing Horse now just 24 points behind Red Bull in the standings after eight races.
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, who came through the Red Bull academy, has been linked with taking Perez’s seat, but if the latter really was to be replaced it would more likely be a driver currently in their roster.
