According to sources, former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley is anticipated to join the San Francisco 49ers, the reigning NFC champion, as an assistant head coach.
After the Chargers fired 41-year-old Staley in December 2023 due to the team’s 5-9 start to the previous season, Staley will now work for the 49ers. He has a 24–24 overall record during his three years as head coach of the Chargers.
Prior to his time with the Chargers, Staley served as defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams (2020) and as outside linebackers coach for both the Denver Broncos (2019) and Chicago Bears (2017-18).
Staley, a native of Perry, Ohio, entered the NFL coaching ranks after serving as defensive coordinator for Division III John Carroll University on two occasions: during the 2013 season and from 2015-16, with a stop as defensive coordinator at James Madison University between the two stints.
The news of Staley’s hiring as 49ers assistant head coach was first reported by ESPN.
In addition to Staley, the 49ers are also expected to promote Nick Sorensen, the team’s defensive pass game specialist and nickel cornerbacks coach, to defensive coordinator. Sorensen will replace former defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who was dismissed from the role Feb. 14, shortly after the 49ers lost Super Bowl LVIII to the Kansas City Chiefs, 25-22.
