The offseason for the Los Angeles Angels has been comparatively quiet. They have strengthened the bullpen with a couple respectable acquisitions, but nothing that is going to drastically alter things.
Many different players on the open market, including some of the larger names, have been contacted by the front office. Kiké Hernández, a former free agency utility player, was one of them prior to his decision to accept a new contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“The Tigers showed a lot of interest. Though they never truly made an offer, the Angels were present. The Giants were in the running, but they too waited until the very end to extend an offer, which is why they ultimately chose not to do so. Additionally, other teams stopped by simply to say “Hey We’re wondering if he wants to sign for that low as well because time is passing and players are signing for incredibly cheap.” And I didn’t back down. I was holding out for the ideal chance.”
Considering the requirements of the Halos, hearing this is a little depressing. Hernández isn’t a particularly good player, but he could have made a big difference for them all around.
His versatility on the field and lively presence in the clubhouse would have offered the team a great deal of options. However, it was just not meant to be. Hernández elaborated on his choice, stating that fit was the most crucial factor.
