Ronnie O’Sullivan benefitted from a refereeing mistake during his Players Championship quarter-final against Mark Selby on Thursday. The three-miss snooker rule should have forced the Rocket to concede the first frame, but there was no warning from referee Desislava Bozhilova after his second miss. If a player has a clear sight of a red and misses it three times in a row, their opponent is awarded the frame. But the referee must warn the culprit after the second miss for the rule to come into effect. In the end, Selby was not made to pay for the referee’s error as he put together an impressive 65 break to take the first frame. He kept his foot on the gas in the second with a break of 91 to put daylight between himself and O’Sullivan, and by the end of the first session he was four to the good. Selby will have gone into the Players Championship clash with the bit between his teeth, having lost his last two head-to-head meetings with O’Sullivan. Their latest competitive clash, in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters last September, ended 10-7 to the Rocket as he went on to lift the title. The pair also met in the 2014 World Snooker Championship final, which Selby won 18-14. A similar refereeing curiosity to the one that unfolded on Thursday occurred at the Welsh Open only last week. Referee David Ford was forced to apologise to Oliver Brown after forgetting to warn Jack Lisowski before his third attempt at grazing the red. The World Snooker Tour subsequently confirmed to Express Sport that the official had made a mistake. To rub salt into Brown’s wounds, Lisowski went on to win the match 4-2.
