Raiders to release former 49ers quarterback Garoppolo after he serves a two-game suspension
Jimmy Garoppolo, a former quarterback for the 49ers, looks to be out of the Las Vegas Raiders organization.
Prior to the formal announcement on Friday morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed that the NFL had suspended veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for the first two games of the 2024 season for violating the league’s policy regarding performance-enhancing substances.
Garoppolo’s usage of prescription drugs without a valid Therapeutic usage Exemption is the reason for the offense.
Shortly after, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that the Raiders will also release Garoppolo, citing a source.
After spending more than five seasons with San Francisco, Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.7 million contract with Oakland during the summer.
Garoppolo completed 110 of 169 pass attempts (65.1%) for 1,205 passing yards with seven touchdowns and nine interceptions in seven games (six starts) with the Raiders before the 32-year-old sustained a back injury in Week 6. In Week 6, veteran backup Brian Hoyer took Garoppolo’s place, and rookie Aiden O’Connell finished the season in his place.
