NEWS UPDATE: HE HAS FINALLY AGREED TO HIS SIGNING AND…………
The Boston Celtics agreed to sign free agent Svi Mykhailiuk on Thursday, strengthening their depth on the wings, the organization stated in a news release. Shams Charania of The Athletic broke the story first.
Mykhailiuk, 26, entered the NBA as the 47th choice in the 2018 NBA Draft out of Kansas and has since played for six clubs, most notably the Hornets. He scored 10.6 points per game over 19 appearances with the Hornets, including eight starts, after the Knicks moved him to Charlotte in February. During that time, the 6-foot-7 forward made a scorching 40.4 percent of his 3-point shots.
Was that an anomaly during basically pointless games due to a tiny sample size? Or an indication that Mykhailiuk has matured after years of experience? In order to address depth at a position that Brad Stevens thought should be reserved for the end of the bench, the Celtics were ready to wager one of their last two roster places on him. With Sam Hauser and Oshae Brissett to support Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown on the wing when healthy, the squad should be fine, but they wanted a veteran who could play when needed. It can take some time for the other wings to grow. Rookie in the second round Jordan Walsh will not turn 18 until after the All-Star break. As a 6-9, Dalano Banton possesses an intriguing skill set.
