In October of 2023, the Boston Red Sox announced that Craig Breslow ’02, a graduate of Yale College, will take over as Chief Baseball Officer. In addition to playing varsity baseball for the Bulldogs, Breslow double-majored in molecular biophysics and biochemistry when he graduated from Yale in 2002. He pitched in Major League Baseball for seven different clubs after graduating, and he currently works in the front office of the Red Sox.
Breslow was dubbed “the smartest man in baseball, if not the entire world” in a 2009 Wall Street Journal story. His achievements on and off the field really do speak for themselves.

As a student-athlete, Breslow came to Yale in 1998 with plans to pursue a medical degree in addition to his baseball career. Breslow had known since he was eleven years old that he wanted to become a doctor because his 13-year-old sister had been diagnosed with pediatric thyroid cancer. The encounter had a deep impression on him, inspiring him to study molecular biophysics and biochemistry at Yale and, eventually, to consider going into medicine as a vocation after graduation.
Breslow pitched for the Bulldogs in men’s baseball while a Yale undergraduate. With an astounding 2.56 Earned tenure Average (ERA) as a senior, he had the lowest in the Ivy League during his stellar four-year tenure.
