Blackburn Rovers, a Championship team, are rumored to have made an inquiry about the Leeds captain. Should a successor be found at Elland Road, the captain may be available this month.
Cooper’s deal with Leeds expires at the end of the season, so a loan move this month would essentially end his tenure there—much like Luke Ayling’s departure did. It’s unlikely that either will receive additional offers.
As previously said, Cooper’s departure would only be approved if someone entered the picture, and Joe Worrall of Nottingham Forest is a new name to add to the list of potential targets today.
Alan Nixon claims that Leeds is interested in acquiring Worrall, but Sheffield United will be a rival as Forest is expected to demand £6 million for the 27-year-old.
Although Sheffield United and Leeds are unwilling to pay that much, they might be able to sign him on loan “at the death.”
There would be a significant leadership void in Leeds’ locker room if Cooper left. For a number of years now, he has been the ideal club captain both on and off the field.
But Worrall, who has led Nottingham Forest as captain for the past eighteen months, might already be Leeds’ ideal Cooper substitute.
As early as March 2019, when Worrall was just 22 years old and only on loan, former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard thought he was captain material.
Having said that, Cooper is supposedly prepared to remain and compete for a spot at Leeds for the remainder of the season, so a lot of things must happen for this signing to be completed.
