This winter, the Boston Red Sox have concentrated on two areas of need: acquiring a right-handed hitter with versatility in his position and starting pitching.

To some extent, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow addressed the former by bringing in right-hander Lucas Giolito, but he hasn’t taken any action to solve the latter.

Breslow should take advantage of any chance to bolster the big-league roster, even if those areas of need continue to be the top objectives. He also seems to be focusing on a possible high-leverage reliever to help the bullpen.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported on Thursday that “two big market teams that have expressed interest in veteran reliever Ryne Stanek are the (Chicago) Cubs and Red Sox.”

In 50 2/3 innings last season, Stanek recorded a 4.09 ERA, a 51-to-21 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a.221 batting average against, and a 1.24 WHIP.

For a Red Sox team where the front of the bullpen is unclear, that kind of output would be appreciated. But his previous year’s performances are on par with the greatest bullpen seasons in living memory.

In 54 2/3 innings, the right-hander had a 1.15 ERA, a 62-to-31 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a.188 batting average against, and a 1.23 walk-to-hit ratio.
