The Red Sox are suspended for the upcoming season for two reasons.

Craig Breslow, the chief baseball officer of the Boston Red Sox, has taken a significant step despite the team’s rather quiet winter.

Executive Paul Toboni was elevated by Breslow to the position of senior vice president and assistant general manager earlier this month.

In his prior position, Toboni oversaw player development and amateur scouting for the team, contributing to the strengthening of Boston’s farm system. Under his direction, the Red Sox drafted and produced a number of elite prospects from 2020 to 2022, including Mikey Romero, Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, Nick Yorke, Blaze Jordan, and Nathan Hickey.

By making this move, the Red Sox may also be able to retain Toboni for an extended amount of time. After all, if another team wants to employ him for the same position, Boston has the authority to refuse their request for an interview if he receives a title increase.

With Toboni’s guidance during the amateur draft in 2020–2022, the Red Sox were able to swiftly improve their farm system. What was previously thought to be one of baseball’s weakest pipelines has evolved into a marginal top-10 system.
