BREAKING NEWS: Leeds player sustained a neck injury with two leg broken ……….

Leeds no longer have access to VAR to reverse bad refereeing calls (though it wasn’t entirely successful either), so officials are scrutinized if they make a mistake in the heat of the moment.

As Preston traveled to Elland Road to play Leeds, David Webb had a challenging afternoon officiating, and he wasn’t helped by the away team’s tactics the entire time.

At Elland Road, the first half was very evenly matched until Leeds equalized with Dan James’ header of a perfectly placed Junior Firpo cross in the second minute, which was the visitors’ goal from a well-worked set-piece.

But challenges were flying in, with Preston receiving two yellow cards for Ben Whiteman and Ali McCann before the half. The second was for a shoulder charge on Dan James that would have resulted in severe consequences even in rugby, let alone football.

Preston enjoyed some success in the first half, but after the break they became much more defensive. The game continued with more aggressive challenges, which culminated in the 85th minute when Ryan Ledson attempted a horrifying, high tackle on Ilia Gruev from behind.

When Ledson was called for a handball in the 93rd minute, he diverted the ball away from Bamford with his outstretched arm. Joel Piroe took over after the number nine initially held the ball, rolling the ball past the Preston ‘keeper to seal three points, giving Leeds the victory they deserved.
